Learners’ Weekend

How depressing is it sitting on the top floor of the library looking at the snow covered mountains knowing it will be at least two weeks before your exams are finished and you can get up there and shred? I hope everyone is as amped as we are for the up coming ski season at Temple Basin. Speaking of Temple Basin the ski field is due to open on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of July (the middle weekend of the holidays).

On the 10th and 11th of July (the weekend before lectures start) CUSSC is having a learners weekend Temple Basin as well as this Ellen Worthington is turning 19 so we have decided to turn it into one massive party AT ALTITUDE!!! Check it out on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=122484274443353&ref=ts.

The weekend will start at the UCSA car park at 7.00AM with people carpooling up to the mountain (we are looking into getting a bus if there are not enough cars) then after a short hike up the mountain you are free to ski or snowboard all day, there will be some experienced committee members helping learners with the basics and how to use nut crackers. If you are not into skiing or snowboarding there is always drinking to be done.

For those of you that are new to the snow Temple Basin has a full range of hire skis and snowboards and boots (prices shown below) or you can hire gear from Gnomes on the way to Temple Basin where all CUSSC members get 15% off (http://www.gnomes.co.nz/).

After skiing or boarding all day we will have some dinner followed with the festivities associated with all big weekends at Temple Basin with the possibility of night skiing. For those of you who haven’t experienced a big weekend at Temple Basin it is something not to be missed with our sound system that can pump sounds across the whole ski field pumping on the dance floor, people getting up to all sorts of hilarious antics, a cheeky odd funnel or two and multiple drinking games.

We will also open our canteen so if you run out of beers we have you covered, or if you get the munchies and need a powerade in the morning our canteen manager will only be too happy to help.

Then its out for another day of shredding the slopes. After packing up and driving home we will be back in Christchurch on Sunday evening.

If you’re unsure what you need to bring, check out our gear page.

Prices for the weekend:

It’s snowing!!!

The last week has seen some pretty crap weather in Christchurch but snow in Arthur’s and Porter’s passes is good news for all the skiers and boarders out there.

Mt Hutt has also had snow but that is significantly less exciting then the prospect of some pre-season touring in the Craigieburn Ranges…

On a separate note, the Temple Basin Buddy Pass offer (4 season passes for $480) closes this weekend so get in quick if you’re still keen. Also our good friends out at Gnomes Snowsports in Darfield have some pretty good deals on all manner of items and all CUSSC members get a sweet discount so it pays to make them your first choice when it comes to new gear.

Get excited for winter at Temple Basin!!!

Video: Rob & Ezra hauling up the 4wd track on their scooters

For initiation weekend Rob and Ezra decided to ride their 50cc scooters to Temple Basin and back, which took them 4 hours each way and required extra petrol cans tied on between their legs. You boys are insane but we love ya. Anyway here’s a video of them trying to get their scooters up the 4wd track:

FOO SAN DINNER

So initiation weekend was epic. The canteen now officially has working eftpos, Rob and Ezra made it to Temple and back on their scooters, there were multiple beer olympics times under 1 min and pants were declared optional.

Next up on our calendar is the Annual Foo San dinner. If a mean feed of Chinese accompanied with some yarns about skiing, boarding, or the club in general sounds like your idea of a good night, flick us an email (we need to confirm numbers soon).

This is a BYO event (unfortunately we were told we weren’t allowed to take a keg like last year… something about vomiting on tables in front of other guests…?) and the onslaught will continue at the Foundry after the food is gone.

When: Thursday 8 March at 5.30

Where: Foo San (just along from R&R/next to Captain Bens)

Cost: $15

Make sure you RSVP to the club email and see you then!

Initiation Weekend

Initiation weekend is THIS WEEKEND!

Come join us up Temple Basin for the first workparty of the year. It’s a perfect opportunity to meet other skiers and snowboarders, spin yarns to those of us who have been around for a few years and generally have a mint party on the hill.

Attending work parties is a great way to earn work tickets which can be exchanged for lift passes/accommodation during the ski season.

Contact the club if you want to come along, need more information or have mates who want to sign up.
